The Ether

Chapter I

Music: Electricity

She attached a beam to the moon crescent
And created a swing
She swung and made a leap
And she flew and she flew for days
Over rooftops and acres and acres of lands
And little islands
Clustered together like oddly shaped flakes

In the aureolin and purple colors of the sunset
She flew
And over dried and cracked desert ground
Already covered in shadow
The spaces seemingly endless
And quiet like underwater

It was not until the horizon met the growing night sky
Like a war between the spheres
That she wished for someone else to be there
But she knew that there was no other way
Than to live through this alone

She flew by mountains valleys and fields
Going higher and higher up
Past flocks of birds
And light transparent clouds
Then through a thick layer of air
Leaving the atmosphere

Her vision blurred
And raging storms pulled at her hair
She felt drowsy and soon
She had the feeling
of being asleep
Surrounded by vague shades

Of blue and grey
Frozen like an oil painting
That had eaten reality
She fell out of consciousness
The shades disappeared

And there was nothing

The presence of electricity surfaced
She regained a sense of existense
Although without grasping where she had been before
Or how long she had been in the present
She could not feel the sensation
Of having a body
But she felt an intense and pulsating heat

After a while
She noticed that she had eyes
But they seemed to have been glued shut
Her head was pounding
And she was feverish and disarrayed
But as she slowly managed to open her eyes

Although her vision still a blur
Her surroundings had started to come clear

She was now able to determine
That she was at an underground train station
Thinking it was strange that she knew
Of such a place

The feverish state that she found herself in
Made her fading sense of reason realize
That she could no longer tell
Between reality and dream
Although it did not seem to matter anymore
Anyway

She had been lying on a row of benches
But was now sitting up straight
Inhabiting a body in a nightgown
The train station was very warm
And very quiet
So quiet
That it seemed to have no air
Although she clearly noticed
Her own breathing

The train stations grainy black
But marble like floor
Stretched from side to side
Resembling still waters that had turned into concrete
Before forming a mighty wave

Not too far in front of her the floor ended
Creating the gap between the grounds edge
And opposing brick wall
Where trains enter and leave the platform

Down the gap
She figured railroad tracks must lie
Even though she could not actually see them
She knew
That there had to be railroad tracks down there

But as the moments passed by she became unwillingly fixated
By not actually knowing if there were
Any railroad tracks down there
Accompanied by a fear of looking down the gap
To find that there was not only any railroad tracks
But a sort of nothing
That would unveil the loopholes in this strange reality
And lead to yet another transformative event
Beyond any fragment of her comprehension

If that was to happen she thought
It would unleash a panic
That so far had been kept locked up deep inside the core
Of her seemingly temporary existence

Her fever had diminished
And she was more lucid than what she perceived was
A couple of minutes ago
It was all somehow familiar
But still so very strange

Music: Arrow

She could not remember anything real
Happening before the now
Everything prior to the train station was to her like water
That had evaporated into a vacuum

She had failed to notice that while sitting on the bench
Her presence had become slightly out
Of focus
And like a fog coming from the ground
She began to feel drowsy
And a desire to lie down and sleep became impossible
To fight against

Her whole being felt like a heavy cloud
Being weighed down by gravity
A sliver of her consciousness wanted to resist
What was happening
But her main senses overwhelming desire to float
In alignment with the calm of nothing
Made everything in another mode
Drown in obscurity

Through the hazes of her sinking further and further
Into a complete state of rest
A train
Slowly and without sound rolled into the platform
Stopped
And opened its doors

As if on cue
She put her feet on the ground
And wobbled as she stood up
Despite her pounding fever and blurred vision she could see
That the inside of the train was dark
Although it had a lightless form of glow

She slowly proceeded to walk towards the train
With her bare feet across the warm marble floor
She could sense a smell of underground brick wall dust
And past her disarray she wondered
If the smell had been there all along
She entered through the open doors
And was now inside the dark train
Instead of seats on each row
There were made beds with white sheets
And white pillows

As she wanted nothing
But to lie down
She crawled into the bed closest to her
And with her last conscious effort
She pulled the cover over herself
And closed her eyes
All the while falling into deep sleep
As the train started moving
Into the tunnel
